Beating the Bounds Walk and Services
Beating the Bounds Walk and Services

The total length around Cayton Parish is a little over 27 miles, but we're breaking it down into five legs between the churches, and you are very welcome to come along on as many as you like! (Or just pitch up at the churches to join in with the refreshments and bits of worship!)
Generally the terrain shouldn't be too arduous, a mix of country roads, footpaths, and bridleways - but being a rural walk there are inevitably sections of rough and uneven ground and stiles to cross.
The current plan for the day is:
Across the first five churches an 'Extended Eucharist':
- 7am gather at St. Andrew's, Burnt Yates, for breakfast (we will be providing croissants or similar, tea, coffee etc. for this one); opening prayers.
- 7.30am depart for St. John's, Bishop Thornton - 2.1 miles. This is the shortest walk of the day, which should offset it being the earliest!
- 8.30am arrive at St. John's for tea/coffee, and to hear the Readings for the day.
- 9am depart for St. Michael's, Markington - 13.2 miles. This is the longest section of the day by far. We will be stopping for a picnic lunch (please bring your own) about halfway through. We will need to maintain a reasonable walking pace (around 2.5mph) to keep to time.
- 2.30pm arrive at St. Michael's for tea/coffee, a welcome break, and the sharing of Communion.
- 3pm depart for St. Wilfrid's, South Stainley - 4.3 miles.
- 4.30pm arrive at St. Wilfrid's for the closing blessing of the Extended Communion service. Please note that this stop will have no refreshments, nor toilet facilities... (excepting trees, obviously).
- 5pm depart for All Saints', Ripley - 4 miles.
Two services to close off the day:
- 6.30pm arrive at All Saints' for refreshment, and a short service of Evensong.
- 7pm depart for St. Andrew's, Burnt Yates - 3.4 miles.
- 8.30pm arrive at St. Andrew's for a final cup of tea, a short Compline (Night Prayer) service, and a celebratory pat on the back!
These times are necessarily provisional on weather/group make up/walking speeds, so can't be guaranteed. We won't leave any church before the planned arrival time, but we may set off before the planned departure time if it helps us stay more on track, so please aim to be with us for the arrival times for any legs you plan on joining.
Please do bring along snacks and food for yourself on the way, and sufficient water. Obviously we'd recommend sturdy walking shoes/boots, and to carry a full set of waterproofs.
You can download copies of the routes here as a pdf; and/or a zip file containing .gpx files for the whole route and as five legs here.
